The published schedule begins with early morning check-in in Key West, followed by roughly two and a quarter hours each way under normal conditions. The usable park visit is less than five hours. Weather and operations can change timing, so do not attach an inflexible evening reservation to the planned return.

The fare currently includes park admission, a light breakfast, lunch, snorkeling gear, and an optional Fort Jefferson tour. Verify dietary needs, gear sizing, and every inclusion at checkout rather than relying on an older review.

Why travelers value the ferry

The ferry removes the need to coordinate separate transport, meals, equipment, and admission. Passengers can move around a larger vessel and arrive with a defined return. That convenience is especially useful for families and first-time visitors.

The destination's isolation, Fort Jefferson, clear-water potential, and wildlife make the day memorable when conditions cooperate. Praise for the park should still be separated from praise for vessel comfort and service.

The motion-sickness decision

The crossing is open water, not a protected harbor ride. Sea state can differ in each direction, and a smooth outbound trip does not guarantee a smooth return. Travelers with a history of motion sickness should plan with a clinician or pharmacist and follow medication directions.

Choose seating and fresh air based on crew guidance, eat appropriately, and bring a layer. A reviewer who sailed on a calm day cannot establish conditions for a future reservation.

Ferry versus seaplane

The seaplane generally costs more but reduces transit time and adds aerial views. The ferry includes more bundled elements and provides a longer continuous park visit on its standard day trip. Availability and weather affect both.

Choose the ferry when value and a structured full day lead. Choose the seaplane when limited vacation time, aerial scenery, or avoiding a long boat crossing justifies the premium. Neither method guarantees perfect weather or visibility.

Overnight camping is a third, substantially different option requiring permits, equipment, food, water, and careful ferry cargo planning. Day-trip reviews do not explain that logistics burden. Most first-time visitors should decide between the standard ferry and seaplane before considering an overnight stay.
